Background of the Study
The performance of civil servants is fundamental to effective public service delivery, and continuing education has been identified as a key driver of enhanced job performance. In Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, civil servants are required to navigate increasingly complex administrative and policy environments. Continuing education programs offer structured learning opportunities that update civil servants on new technologies, management practices, and legislative changes, thereby improving their efficiency and productivity (Olawale, 2023). These programs encompass a wide range of topics, from technical skills development to leadership training, which are crucial for the optimal functioning of government agencies (Emeka, 2024). By fostering a culture of lifelong learning, continuing education enhances the capacity of civil servants to meet public expectations and adapt to emerging challenges. In particular, the integration of modern pedagogical methods, such as blended learning and on-the-job training, has been shown to positively impact job performance by promoting both theoretical understanding and practical application of new skills (Ibrahim, 2025). In a rapidly evolving administrative landscape, the continuous professional development of civil servants is essential to maintain high levels of service quality and accountability. This study explores the relationship between continuing education and job performance, focusing on how targeted training initiatives can lead to measurable improvements in efficiency, innovation, and service delivery in the public sector. The findings of this research are expected to provide insights into the effectiveness of current continuing education programs and offer recommendations for enhancing their impact on job performance among civil servants in Ilorin West (Olawale, 2023; Emeka, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of continuing education programs, many civil servants in Ilorin West continue to face challenges in improving their job performance. The gap between the skills acquired through training and their practical application in the workplace remains a significant concern. Factors such as outdated training content, limited accessibility, and a lack of tailored programs have hindered the potential benefits of continuing education. Consequently, civil servants often struggle with the implementation of innovative practices and efficient administrative processes, leading to suboptimal performance levels. This shortfall not only affects the overall productivity of government agencies but also undermines public trust in service delivery. There is a pressing need to investigate the effectiveness of current continuing education initiatives in enhancing job performance and to identify the challenges that impede their success. Addressing these challenges is critical for ensuring that civil servants are adequately prepared to meet the demands of their roles and to contribute to the development of efficient public institutions (Olawale, 2023; Emeka, 2024).
